Hi,

My grandmother's grandparents, George & Dorothy Birks, lived at Townsyard, Fernhill (no idea of the street name).
George Birks was the superintendant for the Bury Cleansing Department and a municipal horse keeper.
Does anyone know where Townsyard is/was? I think the whole street may have been demolished.

Thanks

Hi everyone,

I have recently been doing some investigation into the history of the area around Old Blackford Bridge and the old section of road that served Manchester to Bury before the new road and the new 'Blackford Bridge' was constructed. I have compared old maps and new maps, collected old photographs, and newspaper cuttings and have found some interesting discoveries. Is there anyone out there that is also interested in the history of this area? If so it would be nice to exchange ...

As far as can make out the corps was very active and at most times oversubscribed, even though they had to, in the main, provide, or at least make a contribution to, their uniform and equipment.
HI

I've found a small stone (possibly quartz) sphere whilst digging in the back garden, Tottington Road, Bury. Could it be a cannon ball? It is about 2 inches in diameter, but not perfectly spherical. Kirkless brook is adjacent to where I found it so it could simply be 'eroded' by the water I suppose. Is this of any interest to anyone in your society? Do you know of any similar finds?

Apologies for bothering you and thanks in advance for any information.

Hello

Some of my ancestors were married in the Bethel Independant Chapel on Henry Street in Bury in th 1880s. I have tried 'streetmapping' Henry Street,Bury and there is a nil return - I fear that Henry Street, and therefore the church no longer exists. Can anyone shed any light on this? We are taking a trip across to Bury this weekend to see the places where our ancestors lived - Nuttall St, Wash Street, Pimhole, Pine Street, Clerke Street...

Many Thanks

My Grandfather Fred Jones, mother Ellen Jones (nee May) was born 26 Henry Street Pilkington in August 1887. Next street over was Edward Street and as I understand, Stand Hall, part of the Stanley (Earls of Derby) Empire was situated not far from these locations.

Would it be fair to assume that the Earls of Derby (in particular 15th Earl of Derby) may have been the owner/Landlord of the above properties?

I would appreciate any assistance with this query.

I'm researching my McKavney + McCreanor family history in the Bury area and would like to know more about Catholicism in Bury from about 1870 onwards. Both strands of the families named above were Catholics from Northern Ireland (they moved to Paradise Street and Lord Street respectively) ...

Although not an avid genealogist, I have in my possession the birth certificate of my maternal grandfather, WILLIAM BUCKLEY who according to the document was born on 25th December 1859 in Stand Lane, Pilkington the son of John Buckley & Jane Buckley (nee Martindale) of Stand Lane, Pilkington. John Buckley's profession is down as 'Inn Keeper'

Whilst not shown on any current day maps, I understand that Pilkington is now an area of Bury. Can anyone confirm this and are there any ...

I have an interest in this, as my ancestor Lawrence Duckworth and his wife Mary (nee Knowles) were on this steam packet.

I've even purchased a book on the subject dating from 1834 "The Wreck of the Rothsay Castle"

Hi

My great grandmother Sarah Emily Edwards was born in Cefn Mawr in Denbighshire. We know that she came to Bury sometime after 1891 and when she married my great grandad, Ernest Warburton on 26th May 1900 at Christ Church Walshaw she was living at 4 Irwell Street, Walmersley and was a Winder. He was living at 75 Belle Vue Terrace, Walshaw. I have managed to locate 4 Irwell Street, Walmersley on the 1891 Census when a Stephen Simpson lived there with his family (but no mention of Sarah ...

I further understand that this Mr Burford could be the same man as a William Burford who worked at the Bury Ground ( Sir Robert Peel apparently said he was the most diligent servant in the Parish !!)

I wonder whether anyone has any further information regarding Mr Burford of New Road Congregational Church ?

For many years the War Memorial of the Lancashire Fusiliers has stood on Bolton Road on the site of the former Barracks and near where the Fusiliers Museum at present stands. There has been much talk and controversy about the moving of this Memorial to Sparrow Park in the town centre where it would be seen by many more people and next to the new Fusiliers' Museum in Moss Street. But not everyone is happy about this arrangement. What are your views on this subject?

My grandparents David & Lizzie Jones evacuate there during the last war.

Lizzie's (nee Barrow) marriage certificate gives her address as Nut Farm Little Heaton.

I assume that Lizzie's parents lived at Nutt Farm, but if they ...
